Startup is scoring with its dynamic pricing system

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Member company Qcue was mentioned today in the Austin American Statesman’s Tech Monday.  Barry Kahn and his team also won the UT MOOT Corp business plan competition.  The article is called Startup is scoring with its dynamic pricing system and here’s an excerpt:

Pricing for plane tickets, car rentals and hotels is constantly changing. Why not for sporting events, too?

That’s what Barry Kahn wondered three years ago, when he was a University of Texas doctoral degree candidate in economics.

Convinced there was a business there, he teamed with UT MBA student Jiten Dalvi in 2007 to found Qcue, which has developed software that prices tickets based on fluctuating market factors.

A year later, their company swept the UT and Rice University business plan competitions, winning $327,000 in cash and services plus a year at the Austin Technology Incubator.

ATI Company Smooth-Stone was in the New York Times today, October 7, 2009.

The post title is: Servers With Cellphone Chips? Yep, Here They Come and here’s the excerpt mentioning Smooth-Stone.

In Austin, Texas, there lurks another start-up called Smooth-Stone. According to people familiar with its plans, Smooth-Stone is working on a chip using the ARM architecture that will go into servers. ARM chips from companies like Samsung and Qualcomm typically make their way into phones like the iPhone.

Barry Evans, the chief executive of Smooth-Stone, did not immediately return a message seeking comment. Mr. Evans worked at Intel for many years in the company’s communications and mobile products groups.

Semantic Web Austin – Supported by ATI

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

The following post was written by one of the participants, Juan Sequeda, in the Semantic Web Event held here at ATI on Saturday, September 19, 2009.  The Semantic Web Group has been supported and co-launched by ATI’s very own Bart Bohn, director of our IT and Wireless Incubators.

Personally, I was really excited about this tutorial and it lived up to all my expectations! Approximately 15 people attended from entrepreneurs, ATI startups, IBM, Hoovers and independent consultants. It was great to see this crowd excited about the real use of Semantic technologies. It is not a myth anymore! AllegroGraph showed us that it does things such as social network analysis, geo and temporal query that other databases cannot do.

Jans was a terrific presenter and everybody left with much more understanding of the role of RDF and triple stores in the real world! I already know that members of the Semantic Web Austin community are going to use AllegroGraph for their projects and companies!

We will be hosting another tutorial soon!

Gendai Games on Austin StartUp

Friday, September 4th, 2009

New ATI Member company, Gendai Games, was recently mentioned on Austin Startup in a post called GameSalad Gears Up for iPhone Publishing System.  A copy of the original post is below.

GameSalad, an online community created to support amateur and professional game development, launched as an open beta application earlier this year is now preparing for the official release of its long awaited iPhone publishing system. In the next few weeks, Gendai Games will be launching a new service that allows games created with the free GameSalad Creator tool to be marketed and sold on the iPhone App Store.

GameSalad is an open platform that allows non-programmers to create games for the web, social networks like Facebook, and also for iPhone. The application is completely free to download from http://gamesalad.com. The social utility allows users to become game designers, creating their own unique games and offering the ability to connect and collaborate with other users. An innovative technology with a user-friendly interface, GameSalad gives would-be game designers access to complex algorithms necessary for implementing professional-level artificial intelligence and game play, without programming knowledge.

“We’re at an extremely exciting point in our company”, says Gendai Games CEO, Michael Agustin. “The number one feature that everyone has been clamoring for is an easy, more intuitive way to create a game for the iPhone. With GameSalad’s visual based logic system along with it’s drag-and-drop interface – we are poised to make that a reality.”

Smooth-Stone Inc., which is a member of the Austin Technology Incubator and develops low power server technology, will receive an initial $250,000 pre-seed investment from the state with potential for $1 million in total investment for the commercialization of its technology.
